Open Question: How much would you buy this for?

I am thinking about selling my bedroom furniture but I do not know what to ask. I have a dresser/ mirror, armoire, side table, and a twin sized head board. It is in good condition. It is all wood cherry furniture. I also have an antique chest of drawers that does not go with the set. What would you sell it for? I am asking it in this section because it is the only one that I am familiar with and I trust your opinions. Thanks!  more

Open Question: How is this for the start of an novel?

CHAPTER I “Oh, come on,” Jacob Sanford said to himself in frustration as he worked away at an AP English essay in his room on one gray and drizzly day in April, He had been required to tackle a passage from one of the most difficult reads of any English course, Moby Dick. He had been at it for nearly two and a half hours and the document on his laptop was completely blank. In desperation for a mental breakthrough, he visually rescanned the prompt. Using the followin passage and excerpt from Herman Melville's Moby Dick, explain the significance of Starbuck, Stubb, and Flask in the context of religion and principle. Make sure to analyze the rhetoric strategies thereof. In utter exasperation, he slammed down his pencil and leaned back in his chair, running his fingers through his dark brown hair. Two thoughts came to his head. The first was: “why did I bother taking this course?” The second was: “Fuck you Herman Melville.” He leaned his head backwards over the back of the chair and closed his eyes. He could feel a headache coming on, so he opened his desk drawer, pulled out a bottle of ibuprofen, and downed a couple of the small rust colored pills. After a few minutes, he felt like getting some fresh air. He needed something to get his mind off that damn essay. He closed the lid of his laptop, and walked downstairs. “Jake,” his mother called to him from the kitchen, “are you done that essay yet?” “No,” he called back, “but its not due until this Friday.” “Okay, but just make sure you don't fall too far behind. I've seen you when you procrastinate and its not pretty.” “Yeah, I know, mom,” he said, “I'll be back in a bit. I'm going outside to get some fresh air.” With that, he walked out the front door. It was still drizzling, and the air was at that perfect medium which only spring could offer. Jake walked a few blocks from his house to a hill which separated two developments. His development sat at the top of the hill; the other sat below it. From atop this hill, one could see all of the Philadelphia skyline. When he reached the hill, he noticed a girl sitting atop it. She was clutching her knees to her chest, her arms wrapped around her shins. She was small for a girl of her age, but that, along with her looks, gave her a certain adorable quality. “Hey Corrine,” Jake said, sitting down next to her. “Oh, hey Jake,” she replied, the tone of her voice soothing and almost angelic in quality, “you're lookin' cute today.” They always playfully flirted with each other. Jake laughed. “You too, girl,” he responded, “how've you been lately?” “I've been doing well,” Corrine answered, “and you?” “Can't say anything significantly different,” Jake answered, “oh, and I'm sorry I ran out on you the other day. You had started to ask me something and I never caught the last part of it.” “Hmm...” she thought, “oh, right, I was gonna ask you why you didn't come to Todd's party on Friday.” Jake shrugged. “My ankle was bothering me. I couldn't put any weight on it,” he explained, “why do you ask?” “I asked because I was a bit disappointed that you didn't show up.” He looked up at her, the tiny droplets of rain landing on her gorgeous auburn colored hair. He loved everyth  more

Voting Question: What is this called?

I'm trying to figure out the exact term for whatever this is. It's made of wood, and looks like moderately expensive wood at that. Deep color, almost red. It is about three feet wide, and maybe a foot tall. It has four spheres underneath that serve as legs. There are numerous small drawers, some of them incorporated into the design of the wood so that they are actually hidden. I want to call it a chest or jewelry box or something, but if I search for it under those names it never comes remotely close to what I want. It was given to me as a gift and I would like to get a few more. It's supposed to be used to hold a lot of different little things categorically, like coins or cards and things like that. I just don't know what to call it. This should probably be an easy answer for someone... Thanks Nope it's not a chinese puzzle box. Not even close. I'm not trying to rag on you, I'm just saying.  more

Resolved Question: I need criticism on my friends writing...?!?!?

please criticize this honestly and openly. How could this be better? any and all answers welcome, please keep your prejudice ideas to yourself. "{I wrote this in January, a difficult month for me. I was struggling with accepting that I was gay... and, for awhile, I resorted to narcotics, something that I am ashamed to say. These events are true, but slightly embellished to enhance symbolism etc. Anyway, I have been trying to revise this for months... with little success. In desperation, I changed to third person. But the rhythm still bothers me.} The chill night air cuts at the naked skin of his chest. From the north whips a frigid January wind into which he presses on, carried by long strides, bitter hatred, and utter desperation. Winter’s deep darkness is broken only by the feeble light of juvenile suburban stars and the dingy, flickering streetlamps that cast grotesque shadows across dead Bermuda grass and onto the empty roadway. The silence is complete but imperfect. To the south, several cars can be heard, on the Bush overpass. A dog barks. But such noises are easily tuned out, lost in the dissonant cacophony that is a focused mind. North Garland hits Campbell; hang a left. Follow Holford across the tollway and into the preserve. It’s darker here, no streetlamps. The road slopes gradually downwards where it hits the creek and begins to climb again. A gust of wind stings his face. “ Fuck me. Come on God. Is that all you’ve got? Bring it on, fucker!” Out on Arapaho, he is back in the light. Each glaring beam gives a shape to his body, captures an instant, a fleeting pose, like a sketch, impure, completely devoid of humanity, but there is no one out to see. “ So what do you aim to do now?” Right onto Shiloh and then back to Campbell, then North Garland, then home. But what waits at home? A Vicodin and a warm bed? He isn’t accustomed to uncertainty. But his feet now bear him grudgingly. They won’t hold out much longer. The remaining miles pass slowly and it isn’t without relief that he sees the dull glow coming from his bedroom window, partially obscured by a leafless Japanese maple. In his drawer is a prescription bottle that, after remaining nearly full for several months, has been emptying rapidly over the past week. “ So this is what it amounts to? Narcotics?” “ Ya, it really is that easy.” “ But isn’t there anything more?” He smiles. “ La vie ne vaut rien mais rien ne vaut la vie.” He chases the pill with a palmful of tap water and collapses on the bed. Outside the window, dawn breaks. The streetlamps go off and the light, the harsh light that had illuminated his body, revealing him to the world while blurring the subtleties of his features, is replaced by a soft, grey glow radiating from the east."  more

Resolved Question: eughh why do i keep getting these bugs in my room :(?

i dont know whether theyre moths or some sort of fly, but they have wings and are quite small, they look light in colour when they're flying but when they are actually on a surface they look black. they are about this size i'd say roughly when theyre flying: http://early-retirement-advice.com/Images/small-moth-1.jpg anyway, ive had like about 8 in my room (on different days) in the past 2 weeks or so. i mean, one night i vaccumed one up (thats how ive been getting rid of them) and then later on there was another one. why do you think there are so many in my room? i live in england (southend) and my room is kept clean, the only pars i need to properly clean out are under my bed and under a chest of drawers. what do you think? its really getting on my nerves and im scared of bugs anyway :/ x  more

Resolved Question: I am buying a queen bed headboard, foot board and side set, all with storage. It's black, called "Balboa" and?

it's a set from Haverty's Furniture. I really like it. It's my first new furniture set ever. Since it's black wood, do I need to replace my dark wood chest of drawers and dresser, since it might not match? I hate to get rid of them and spend more money on matching pieces in the set, since the wood pieces in that set will probably come having to be put together and may not be as valuable or as sturdy as what I already have. Resolved Question: What do you think of my book?

So here a preview on a Random page that i picked on my 2 chapter. I haven't got to editing it yet so there will be grammar mistakes. It was time! I was going to make him pay. Oh i couldn't wait till he comes home. As i slip into the kitchen i open the top drawer. Running my fingers on a Velvet box i slowly opened it. "1.....small.....extremely sharp..knife" i whispered. I lifted the knife carefully out of the box. Letting it shimmer in the light. As the alarm went off, I slipped the knife carefully into my back pocket and went to great him. He hugged me adn went to go watch his football. "Lets play a..... game shall we" i mumbled in his ear. "What type of games" he smiled back. I slowly stood up and went into a draw. "How about a game of escape the rope" i smiled back. He looked confused." I tie you up and you have to escape. So get over here." i whisper. After 5 fisher men's bend knots i watched him struggle. Once i knew he was stuck i slowly raised the knife. "Emma what are you" he screamed at me his voice cracking in panic. I drove the knife down to wards his chest. Both our eyes close. I can hear the knife tear though the skin. I slowly open my eyes to see an arm stretch out in front of my target. "Oliver what are you doing i'm trying to murder him" i try unsuccessfully to shove him away. Then i noticed who i had stabbed. Blood poured from Oliver arm. He rasied his hand to the knife i pulled it out. Flinches for a seconde from pain. Oliver was losing blood quickly. "Great now i have one person unconsious and one person bleeding to death" i whisper. I had caused this know whta m i going to do. So i know its weird because you ahve no idea whats gonig on but thats how chapter 2 ends. Anyways some background info might help understnad a bit. Emma: Shes a perefect (angel) Who has every think she wants but is forced (by her father ) to marry a rich doctor. Who is also an angel. Oliver is a bad *** Demon who started out as a Angel. He was nearly murdered by Emma's soon to be hubby. James saved him and brought him to coju and turned him demon Cuju: Demon hell's leader, He is also Oliver father who fell for a angel who fell for him who wasen't all angel was also part demon wolf and a pinch of vampire. She and cujo have a child wich is rasied in Angel place. Its kinda confusing but if i posted the book you would be like ohhhh but yer tell me what you think ignore the grammar and spelling please lol thanks (sorry so long) ok people )some people) are really pissing me off about the grammar i said its arough draft i'm going to edit it later i want to know if people like it i mean i don't want to go though all hard work editing it and people hate it so god people just lay off  more

Resolved Question: Can Danish Oil Finish be applied over an oil based stain?

I am refinishing a chest of drawers. It is pine. This has turned in to a long labor of love. I stripped off the coats of crap. The layer include from the wood up-black stain-brown paint-some kind of clear lacquer. I wasn't able to remove all the black stain so I sanded and sanded. Some of the black remained but I stained over it with Minwax Wood Finish in Gunstock. The results look like my wood floors which are Tiger Wood. Resolved Question: My question: Am I reading into her remark “Aren’t you glad, etc”?

My question: Am I reading into her remark “Aren’t you glad, etc” I used to only put the out of season clothes in the den closet and my bedroom closet would only have the in season clothes. In other words if it was summer the summer clothes would be in my bedroom closet and the winter clothes would be in the den closet, and then when it was winter I would take the winter clothes out of the den closet and put them into my bedroom closet and take out the summer clothes and put them in the den closet - this procedure was always my mom‘s idea, she likes to do things the hard way. But I told my mom this did not make any sense so my mom gave me the bigger half of the closet in the den for my summer clothes as well the three bags that used to be in my bedroom. This way I don’t have to twice a year change closets. I used to have one shopping bag full of clothes between my TV and my desk, and the other two shopping bags full of clothes underneath my bedroom window. They were kind of an eye sore in my room, but all my dresser drawers were full and so was the closet in my bedroom.. Now the only thing that is underneath my window is a hope chest. The other hope chest that I own is in the den (always has been) underneath the window. At night I take out a pair of pants, a blouse or a sweater I want to wear for the next day and  more

My little sister Savannah has a bladder problem, she has to wear diapers to bed. Well, all year I have threatened her to tell her friends if she didn't do what I said. She did. I wanted to go hang with my friends, but my dad told me to clean the basement, then my room. My dad was still behind me when I told her to do it. Put diapers in my drawers, and told me the punishment. I have to wear a diaper all day everyday for a week. (to school and at home) I don't want to, so can I do anything to get out of it. Voting Question: Way to non-permanently paint a design on a chest of drawers?

Hi. I want to paint and maybe partially draw a design onto the side of my chest of drawers, but I don't want to paint directly onto the wood. In case I get bored with the design or I want to give the drawers to somebody else, or something, I want a way of painting it which means it could be removed in the future. I was thinking maybe wallpaper, but I'm not sure of a way of sticking it to the chest of drawers which would mean it would stay put but also that I could peel the wallpaper off without leaving nasty residue. Any tips, with the wallpaper or a whole new idea? I preferably want to be able to draw with pencil, but something which I could paint only would also be great. Thanks. :)  more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this design and furniture for my small room?

I am redecorating my room and it is really small (9' by 9'). I was thinking 2 hot pink and 2 light/medium orange walls, and then brown accents (curtains, carpet etc.). I was then thinking of having a loft bed like this to save space: http://www.bedzrus.co.uk/cart.php?target... (i would have it without the chest of drawers) i could have the ladder etc. in orange, pink, black or lilac. I would also replace the wardrobe with this chair: http://www.johnlewis.com/230227546/Produ... (i already have the chair in my room, it is just taking up a lot of space so i could put it under the loft bed instead). By the way I am 13. Resolved Question: What's with my cat? More affectionate than usual - i've had her for 5+ years at least.?

Well, recently [im not sure how recently, anything from a month ago to now.] my cat has been acting MEGA affectionately towards me. I've noticed it the most from today to about 4 days ago at the most. A good couple of months ago, she started jumping in my closet where i keep my cloths, and sitting on the school p.e bag i have on a shelf in there. And a good few times she's decided to lay down in one of my drawers in my chest of drawers where i keep things like underwear and night clothes and things which is rather odd, since she hasn't done it before and ive had her for at least 5 years, AT LEAST. [she was a stray and we didnt know how old she was when we got her, she looked like an adult.] Though her sudden affectionate actions have me curious, she's doing things she doesn't normally do like she sits on top of my PC which she's never done before, she keeps rolling around my bedroom floor and laying down there which she hardly ever does, and she keeps meowing every so often [when not asleep and looking for more attention] but it seems to be only when i'm around, she doesnt do it to anyone else. She did have some kittens a couple years ago, which we gave away shortly because my mum didnt want to keep them. I can't really tell if shes eating more than usual, because she eats a lot anyway. She doesnt seem any fatter either, so i doubt shes pregnant. Its just this weird sudden affectionate behaviour that has me puzzled. And for some reason she keeps deciding to chew and play with my bras these past few days, another thing which shes never done before.. Thanks for all the answers! =] Triston - I really hope she is, this time i think we could keep the kittens! Moochi - definatly hope it's not a brain tumor. J - I think she got over it a long time ago, she never changed at all when she lost them, she been the same up untill today. I haven done anything different than normal to her recently..Plus im always the one feeding her, when the bowls empty she meows and i come along and fill it as usual. Plain- I was upset last week, but i've been upset before and she hasent changed, i dont see why she would suddenly do it now. Old Uncle - unfortunatly, im unsure weither she has or not, i don't think so. She might be, but ive had he for a long time and ive NEVER noticed her like this before. And maybe your right, it might just be because she's getting older.  more

Resolved Question: What's the best way to sell off this stuff - ebay?

I'm moving and have quite a lot of stuff too sell off - a few big pieces of furniture,(sofa, cabinets, bed, wardrobe chest of drawers, tables and chairs etc), a lot of books, cds and a pc, printer and laptop also a washing machine also a fish tank. The furniture was brought new and is in good condition but wasn't hugely expensive - bed £100,Wardrobee and cabinet £120, Table and chairs - £60. Virtually all flat pack build your self stuff. The computers and printer again are in good condition but not the latest models being 3 years old. Washing machine was brought from a friend who'd had it a year for £100 - again its in good condition. If i go down the ebay route how do send off and package large items? Resolved Question: What can I do with my room?

Here's what it looks like: 7ft 9in in height. 12 ft in width. 11ft 4 in length from alcove to wall. My room is a dormer room so there's two slopes on opposite walls from about 3ft 6in --> 4ft. Now, I have a double bed. Small locker, medium sized desk, chest of drawers and a double door wardrobe. Also, I have a big shelf full of DVDs that's on my floor. Oh, and a storage box. Now hopefully, I'll be getting a new double bed, I think it's a bit smaller than the one I have. I might be getting fitted wardrobes, which means I might be getting rid of the storage box, chest of drawers, double door wardrobe and possibly the desk. The shelf will be going onto my wall. But I have 3 petition walls and one solid wall which the shelf is going onto and it''s a slope wall. So, my radio will have no place to go. Where should I put it? If I do get these wardrobes, I might be getting a storage bench put into the alcove of my room but I still want more from my room. What else can I do??. Bear in mind, I'm also kind of space limited. Sorry for it being so long, wordy and confusing. Thanks in advance!!!!!  more

I have a large room: a queen bed, a desk with no drawers, a vanity with 6 drawers, a shelf/chest, a set of vertical drawers and a mini closet with shelves. Resolved Question: Today I had a nightmare...will you try to explain it?

I had killed about twenty cats and put them in a chest of drawers to feed another cat and it's kittens. The difference between this cat and the cats I had killed was that one looked fierce. I brought one of them to this cat and it's kittens. It was half dead and a big cat so they stopped biting it soon. I was surprised to see it still alive and I pittied it so I decided to help it to stay alive.  more

Resolved Question: Dream- I got cut by my friend Marco with a knife in my chest on accident.?

I was going to sleep with my friend Marco, but then i totally forgot that my other friend Dave was coming to pick me up to drive me to work.. i looked outside and Dave was coming up to my apartment.( it was pouring rain) Marco told him i wasnt going to work; then Dave left. I waved to him from my bedroom window when he got outside, he looked up and then out of nowhere he went psycho (his car moved sideways, which i find wierd cause cars cant do that) he started to run up the the building. I told Marco Dave was coming up here and acting crazy.. so Marco went to grab a knife out of the drawer and went to the door. Dave was pounding on the door, Marco told me to step back and accidently cut me in my chest if a really sharp knife. The last thing i remember is Dave getting into the door and i woke up. But when i woke up it felt like i actually had a deep cut in my chest near my throut. What does this mean? Please help  more

Resolved Question: How much would all this cost?

I want to change everything in my room and this is what I'd like. I want to paint my room fully white and on one wall I want to get black zebra stripes painted on it. I want new furniture in white-single bed, wardrobe, bookshelf, desk, chest of drawers, bedside table, lamps. And other things like bedspread, curtains, lampshades, pillows, rug, etc. That kind of thing. How much would all this cost in Ireland. Thanks. x  more

Voting Question: I am Decorating my Bedroom....?

And I want sort of an 'Old Hollywood' look. wow surprise there right. Doesn't everybody? Well anyway I do, but I not the whole over-the-top 'my-bedroom's-a-exact-replica-of-Marilyn-Monroe's' sort of thing, the way a lot of American's seem to be going towards. I am Australian and sensibility usually comes before extravagance, in my case anyway. I can't get rid of my timber blinds, my timber bed side table and dressing table/chest of drawers and my wooden floor, all of which are three different wood colours. And my not-so-built-in wardrobe, which I hate. So really all I can do is get new bedding, which I'm doing, and get some lamps and stuff I guess. What I want to ask is, does anyway have any ideas about any styles, like for my bedding and colour scheme's and that sorta thing? Knowing me, I will probably go with my original instinct but any help will be valuable and I will be truly grateful. :) Note: (on a completely different topic) The Yahoo Spell Corrector thing accepted 'sorta' as a word but gave me an ugly red line underneath my spelling of 'colour. And also complained about my use of punctuation, apparently I use too much, sorry if I know how to write. Just saying....  more

Voting Question: Need a headboard for teen girls. Good websites?

I'm 13 and i'm redecorating my room, and I need a headboard. The only thing is, is I dont want a metal one, i want like an ivory silky one, with a bed frame that kind of matches if possible. If not that's fine, I just want a nice headboard that's not metal. Also, any sight that you think might sell a kind of short olive green chest of drawers. Thank you!  more

Resolved Question: Seeing my GP/Crisis intervention team in an hour. Should I tell them this?

Today I got the tape measure out of the kitchen drawer. I measured the circumference of my thighs, hips, chest, arms and neck. If I look back over my measurements since last November, I have generally taken off 5 inches all over. I promised myself 6 by my wedding day. With 5 weeks to go, that is still another inch. I know I can – I will achieve that if I reach the date. So I looked at the measurements. I took an old pair of trousers out of my wardrobe and slipped them over my running shorts. Fair enough, they were huge. I know that I wore them when I was at my heaviest weight and even then the seams were loose, because I would rather squeeze into a smaller size than buy new clothes. Without even realising or thinking, I had taken myself downstairs, grabbed a pair of scissors, cut them to shreds and collapsed in tears on my bed. I took the longest strip I could find and tied six knots inwards from each end. I measured the last knot so that it was exactly an inch and a half smaller than my neck circumference, and put the strip around my neck. I turned off the phones, and turned on the TV. Every 5 or 10 minutes I tightened the material so that it was closer and closer towards the smallest point. I eventually got to the knot which was before the cut off point where I knew I would probably stop breathing. I must have measured or counted wrong because I then found myself waking up with the cats asleep on my chest and legs. All I can think about now is that if I had gone that one knot further... The thing is, I do not want to die. I just wish I had never been born in the first place. I am not so naive as to think that if I did die, nobody would be affected. I have just seen firsthand what death does to a family. What it looks like. That is why things have changed today. I don’t think I would consider slashing my wrists with a kitchen knife, as I previously thought. It’s too messy. Although I must admit the thought of drawing blood at the moment is particularly appealing as a form of release, nothing else. I desperately want something to change my mind. I want there to be something, someone in my life that makes living seem to be a slight advantage, but at the moment I am so riddled with guilt and self-loathing that I can’t see it. Maybe that is what separates me from the rest. I really, really hope that I find that something before it is too late. I don’t want to reach the last knot, but I’m coming to terms with the fact that it is a possibility. I have been diagnosed with Bulimia in the last 6 weeks, having suffered from in for 11 years.  more

Resolved Question: How much should my husband charge?

My husband is pretty good at doing DIY, and a friend of mine has asked if he could redecorate her daughter's bedroom. This would involve moving the bed and chest of drawers out, stripping wallpaper, filling in holes, painting, glossing, etc, as well as painting a cabinet and putting that up on the wall. She said she would pay him and we are going over in the next few days to give her a quote, but my husband has no idea what to charge. Should he charge by the hour or for the whole job? It's awkward as we don't want to charge too much, but we don't want to do it for a pittance either. My husband has been out of work for six months now and this money would really come in handy. Thanks everyone.  more
